Mount Meru

Mount Meru is Tanzania's second-highest mountain and one of East Africa's most spectacular volcanic peaks, rising to 4,566 meters (14,980 feet) above sea level. Located within Arusha National Park, Mount Meru is renowned for its dramatic landscapes, rich wildlife, and rewarding trekking experience. The mountain is surrounded by diverse ecosystems, including lush montane forests, open grasslands, alpine meadows, and rocky volcanic terrain. These habitats support a wide variety of wildlife, such as giraffes, buffaloes, elephants, colobus monkeys, bushbucks, and numerous bird species, making the lower slopes ideal for both wildlife viewing and hiking. Mount Meru offers one of Tanzania's most scenic trekking adventures, with well-established trails leading through forests, across ridges, and up to the summit at Socialist Peak. Climbers are rewarded with breathtaking views of the volcanic crater, the surrounding plains, and nearby Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days. Visitors can enjoy guided mountain treks, wildlife viewing, birdwatching, photography, and spectacular sunrise views from the summit. The climb is often chosen as an excellent acclimatization trek before attempting Mount Kilimanjaro, while also offering a rewarding adventure in its own right. Known for its stunning scenery, diverse wildlife, and exciting hiking opportunities, Mount Meru is one of Tanzania's premier trekking destinations and a highlight of the country's northern tourism circuit.
