Mt Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the world's tallest free-standing mountain, rising 5,895 metres (19,341 feet) above sea level. Located in northeastern Tanzania near the Kenya border, it is a dormant volcanic mountain with three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Despite its height, Kilimanjaro is one of the few major mountains that can be climbed without technical mountaineering skills, making it one of the world's most popular trekking destinations.
About This Destination
European explorers first documented the mountain in the 19th century, and in 1889, German geographer Hans Meyer became the first recorded person to reach the summit. In 1973, Mount Kilimanjaro was gazetted as a national park, and in 1987, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its outstanding natural value.
