9 Days Shira Route
Shira Route 9-Day Kilimanjaro Climb The 9-Day Shira Route is one of the most scenic and rewarding ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 m). Beginning on the western side of the mountain, the route crosses the spectacular Shira Plateau, offering breathtaking views, diverse landscapes, and excellent opportunities for acclimatization. With an extended 9-day itinerary, climbers have more time to adjust to the altitude, making this route one of the best options for maximizing summit success. The adventure starts with a drive to Shira Gate, followed by a transfer to the trailhead on the Shira Plateau. Because the route begins at a relatively high elevation, the extra acclimatization day is especially beneficial. From the open moorland of the plateau, the trail joins the Lemosho Route and continues through some of Kilimanjaro's most beautiful scenery, including volcanic ridges, alpine deserts, and dramatic valleys. One of the highlights of the trek is the hike to Lava Tower (4,630 m) before descending to Barranco Camp (3,950 m). This "climb high, sleep low" approach helps your body adapt to the altitude while showcasing some of the mountain's most impressive landscapes. The journey then continues over the famous Barranco Wall, through Karanga Camp, and on to Barafu Camp, where you'll prepare for the summit attempt. Around midnight, you'll begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). Reaching the summit at sunrise is a truly unforgettable experience, with spectacular views of Kilimanjaro's glaciers, volcanic crater, and the endless plains of Tanzania. After celebrating your achievement, you'll descend to Mweka Camp before completing your adventure at Mweka Gate.
